The Silverman Center for Infertility and Treatment

Only someone who has experienced it firsthand can understand the pain and sorrow of infertility. Beyond the despair of repeatedly trying to become pregnant and failing, there is also the isolation from friends and family who have children and, as the years pass, the added risk of miscarriage and genetic disorders threaten. Moreover, until fairly recently, the only recourse for couples suffering from infertility was adoption.

But now, thanks to extensive medical research and rapid technological innovation, there are numerous options that allow infertile couples to bear children. In vitro fertilization (IVF), by making it possible to fertilize eggs outside the body, has opened the door for countless families to have healthy children on their own. Combined with artificial insemination and the ever expanding array of fertility drugs available, previously childless couples now have a vast array of options at their disposal. These procedures have also led to a sharp increase in surrogacy as a means to having children. Whether by using the couples own egg and sperm or through donor egg and sperm, women who experience complications during pregnancy now have the option of enlisting a surrogate to bear a child on their behalf. In fact, procedures have developed to such an extent that it is now possible to virtually guarantee to select your future child’s gender, making it possible to balance a family with predominately boys or girls and to avoid gender-linked genetic diseases.

While infertility, and the associated emotional distress and disappointment, are by no means a thing of the past, IVF and the astounding developments in the field have answered the prayers of millions of couples who are now blessed with the family of their dreams.

The infertility work up and treatment can be performed in my office which pleases most patients. This offers the advantages of; 1. being performed in a more familiar environment for the patient, and 2. providing the service at a lower cost and convenience than can be delivered in a hospital setting.

Fertility Medications

Drugs used in women who don’t ovulate and in the Ericsson Method: The only drug that may be used is Clomid (clomiphene citrate). Dr. Silverman’s study in the 2002 issue of “Human Reproduction” indicates that the chances of having a girl using the Ericsson Method increased significantly by taking Clomid. Clomid stimulates the portion of the brain, called the hypothalamus, to produce increased amounts of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH which travels to the pituitary, stimulates the release of FSH which causes egg recruitment and development.
